Course 1D - “How to Draw”

Seven lessons, based on drawing from observation, aimed at improving skills and giving confidence. Proportional measuring, perspective and notes on texture, tone, line and layout are all included. Each lesson has topics to try and a homework task to complete and send in for assessment.

 

Lesson Plan

  1. Materials you will need, how to look after them. Observational drawing. using line.
  2. Still Life subjects. Shape. Shadows. Line as Tone. Proportional measuring.
  3. Your environment. How to put a layout together. Perspective. Using a sketch book.
  4. Drawing people is not difficult. Facial features, clothes. How to draw texture.
  5. Drawing small things ”close up”. Pattern and how to use it for interest.
  6. Different media. Pen and Ink. Pen and Wash. How to create 3 - dimensional form.
  7. A choice: Landscape, Still Life, Imaginative work or a Portrait. Enlarging a sketch.

A pack of paper and good quality materials for drawing is included with the first lesson of this drawing course. You are then all ready to go!

Course 2L - “Landscapes in Watercolour”

Seven lessons, starting with some easy exercises in tonal and linear perspective, moving through studies of trees and buildings to finished landscape paintings. Notes, some in colour, are included on tone, foreground interest, proportional measuring, colour mixing, trees, buildings, perspective and how to use tone.

Lesson Plan

  1. How to create depth and distance, using tonal perspective. Foreground interest.
  2. How to use linear perspective for houses, roads, lanes hedges and fences.
  3. Skies - different moods, different light, different times of day. Different techniques.
  4. Trees - studies [sketches] of single trees and groups of trees and bushes.
  5. “Landscape with trees”. Composition and layout. A finished painting.
  6. Buildings - studies [sketches] of cottages, houses, outbuildings, barns and sheds.
  7. “Landscape with buildings” Composition and layout. A finished painting.

Each lesson has a homework task to complete and send in for assessment.

Course 3S - “Still Life in Watercolour”

Seven lessons, starting with easy exercises on backgrounds, depth, light and shade, moving through studies of flowers, seed heads, fruit, pots, pans. china and glass. Notes, some in colour, are included on reflections, perspective and proportional measuring, ellipses, tone, and how to make a handy colour mixing chart.

Lesson Plan

  1. Backgrounds - fabrics, tables, tiles, walls, windows and even gardens.
  2. Creating distance in a painting. How to use tonal and linear perspective.
  3. Pots, pans, dishes and vegetables. How to draw ellipses [circles in perspective].
  4. Dishes, bowls and fruit. How to use light and shade to show form.
  5. Vases and containers, flowers, leaves and seed heads. Using detail for interest.
  6. Pottery, china and glass. How to draw reflections amd the “shine” on things.
  7. A finished painting. Something you could hang on the wall!

Each lesson has a homework task to complete and send in for assessment.



Taster Course

For people who are not quite sure if they can manage the full seven lesson “How to Draw” course, here is a suggestion and special offer! Why not try a “Taster” of three lessons only?

The first three lessons of the Drawing course are all about drawing from observation from the everyday things that you have around you. For a special price you can have these three lessons only, complete with the assessment of your three homework tasks in exactly the same way as the full course. Anyone can improve their drawing skills with the projects and tasks in these three lessons.

  • They are suitable for anyone who has completed the Cat’s Whiskers Course in Drawing for Beginners and Improvers. There are four lessons in each Advanced course. Each lesson includes pages of drawings, diagrams and illustrations, some in colour.
